BITCOIN MOAI reimagines the Easter Island Moai as a monument to digital currency, putting the oldest form of monument making in service of the newest form of wealth.
The work. Created in 2022, the piece asks a genuinely open question: what will the monuments of this era look like to the archaeologists of the next one? The Moai were built by a society to outlast itself, and they did. Applying that same monumental language to a currency that exists only as a distributed ledger is either a joke or a serious proposition, and the sculpture declines to say which.
The form. The Moai silhouette is one of the most recognisable in world sculpture, heavy browed, long faced and immovable, and it is left intact so the crypto reference reads as an addition rather than a redesign. The high gloss finish is the only element that betrays the century.
Materials and craft. Resin cast Moai form with acrylics and epoxy under a high gloss finish, on a display base.
For the collector. On a desk it is a conversation starter; in a collection it functions as a time capsule. It speaks directly to collectors who are technology fluent and want work that engages the actual world they operate in. Suited to an office, study, lounge or gallery shelf.
