BUTTERFLIES is the HYPNOTIQ nature series: butterfly forms rendered in saturated resin with the precision finishing that turns each wing into a surface rather than an illustration.
The work. Created in 2022, the series brings the natural world into a contemporary art conversation that has often used it coldly, as specimen. These read warmer than that. The butterfly is the most temporary thing available as a subject, and casting it in the most permanent material in the studio is the whole argument of the piece.
The form. The wings are worked in a combination of translucent and opaque acrylics, so light passes through some passages and stops at others. That mix is what makes the colour shift as the viewer moves, and why the forms read as alive rather than mounted.
Materials and craft. Resin cast butterfly forms with translucent and opaque acrylics and epoxy under a high gloss finish, supplied with display bases or wall mounts.
For the collector. They can be shown freestanding or mounted on a wall, singly or as a group, and grouping gives the best result because the scale relationships start to read as flight. Suited to a bedroom, studio, hallway, dining room or gallery, and to collectors of nature and botanical subject matter in a contemporary treatment.
