CAUTION TAPE is a kinetic sculpture that encases real caution tape in epoxy and sets the whole thing turning on a motorised base.
The work. Created in 2022, the piece plays with the language of danger and restriction, and with the art world's own tendency toward self seriousness. Caution tape exists to keep people back; putting it inside a gallery object, under permanent resin, inverts its entire function. The laugh gets you through the door and the craft is what keeps you there.
The form. Rotation is doing real work here. Caution tape is designed to be read at a glance from a fixed position, and turning it means the warning is never legible for long, so the message is present but never resolves. The tape is genuine rather than printed, sealed under epoxy so the creases and folds of the original material stay visible.
Materials and craft. Resin structural core with real caution tape elements encased in epoxy, a motorised kinetic base, acrylics and spray paint under a high gloss finish.
For the collector. A work for a gallery, studio, lounge, office or retail interior with space for a moving object to be seen from all sides. It suits collectors of kinetic art and street art influenced contemporary sculpture, and anyone who wants a piece with genuine wit in it.
