DESIGNER SKULLS is a mixed media resin skull set that puts memento mori tradition and fashion house bravado in the same object.
The work. The skull has been a subject in art for as long as art has existed, and its meaning has never really changed. What changes is the surface a given era puts on it. This set applies the visual confidence of contemporary luxury design, and the contrast between the oldest subject and the newest styling is what gives the group both edge and elegance.
The form. Shown as a set, the skulls read across each other, and the differences in treatment are what generate the meaning. Grouped on a shelf they function as a series of variations; separated they each hold their own surface.
Materials and craft. A 3D printed structural core, hand sanded to a fully smooth surface, encased in an automotive grade high gloss resin finish, with mixed media surface work.
For the collector. Best shown grouped, on a credenza, mantel, bookshelf or gallery shelf. It suits collectors of skull and memento mori imagery and of fashion inspired contemporary sculpture.
