JAW DROP SKULLS ON DRUM is the monument scale version of the HYPNOTIQ jaw drop series: open jawed skulls mounted on a custom oil drum base that raises both the subject and the argument.
The work. Created in 2022, the piece puts the oldest symbol in art on top of one of the most disposable objects industry produces. That collision is the point. A skull on a plinth is classical; a skull on an oil drum is a comment on what our own era chooses to build monuments out of.
The form. The skulls sit at the crown of the drum with their jaws open, so the silhouette breaks against the hard cylinder below. The drum is hand painted with graffiti surface work, and the combination of a matte industrial body with high gloss skulls above gives the composition two distinct surface behaviours in one object.
Materials and craft. Resin cast jaw drop skulls with metallic paint detailing, acrylics and an epoxy seal, in a combination of high gloss and matte finishes, on a custom hand painted oil drum base with display hardware.
For the collector. At floor level it is a statement; on a pedestal it is a monument. Suited to an entry, a lounge, a bar, a gallery, a showroom or a hospitality interior, and to collectors of street art influenced sculpture and industrial material work.
