MAGNOLIA SUSPENDED is a wall mounted sculpture in which a female figure appears to float inside a sweeping sculptural ribbon, surrounded by dimensional magnolia blossoms, the whole composition set against an intensely reflective violet mirrored Plexiglas ground.
The work. The subject is beauty held in motion rather than at rest. The figure is not standing on anything and is not falling; she is carried, wrapped into the ribbon so that the boundary between body and movement disappears. The magnolias emerge around her rather than being arranged beside her. Figure, flower and motion are modelled as one continuous form, which is what separates this from a figurative sculpture with decorative flowers attached.
The form. The ribbon is the structural spine of the piece, curving through the composition and carrying the eye in a single unbroken line. The figure sits inside that curve. The blossoms punctuate it, breaking the sweep at intervals so the movement reads as rhythmic rather than uniform. Everything sits proud of the violet ground, so the work throws real shadows and changes as the viewer moves past it.
Materials and finish. The figure and magnolias are 3D fabricated and finished in a luminous pearl silk white, which holds a soft porcelain sheen instead of a hard reflection. Behind them, violet mirrored Plexiglas does the heavy visual work, returning the room back into the piece and doubling the white forms in reflection.
The light. An integrated wireless rechargeable RGB LED system sits behind the violet Plexiglas. Illuminated, the surface stops behaving like a mirror and becomes a field of colour, and the white figure reads as lit from within its own background. The work therefore has two entirely different states, daylight and illuminated, and it is designed to be lived with in both. The light is part of the sculpture rather than an accessory to it.
For the collector. A statement wall work for a living room, entry, stairwell, primary bedroom, boutique or hospitality interior, particularly where the lighting is already treated as part of the design. It suits collectors of contemporary figurative sculpture, illuminated and light based art, and mixed media work that combines digital fabrication with traditional botanical subject matter.
