MARILYN BIRTHDAY CAKE is the most celebratory work in the HYPNOTIQ Monroe series: a 32 inch figure standing on a hand painted graffiti drum, built around one of the most replayed moments in twentieth century culture.
The work. Created in 2023, the piece combines portraiture, pop culture and narrative. The birthday cake element is what moves it beyond likeness: a portrait shows a person, but an object with a cake in it shows an event, and the viewer supplies the rest of the story without being told it.
The form. The figure stands full length in saturated pinks and pastels, with vivid contrasting hair, on a cylindrical drum base hand painted in graffiti script. That base does real conceptual work: setting a glamour icon on a piece of industrial street furniture puts high culture and street culture on the same vertical axis.
Materials and craft. Large resin cast figure with acrylics, spray paint and epoxy under a high gloss automotive finish, with a birthday cake sculptural element and a hand painted drum display base.
