MELTING ICE CREAM catches an ice cream cone in the act of surrendering, the melt held permanently at the moment it becomes irreversible.
The work. Created in 2021, this is one of the most universally liked pieces in the catalogue, and it earns that by being funnier and sadder than it first appears. The real subject is not ice cream, it is the impulse to preserve beautiful things, and the sculpture satisfies that impulse by making the loss permanent instead of the object.
The form. The flow is the composition. The cone stays upright and structural while the melt runs down and outward, pooling into a form that becomes the base, so the piece is widest exactly where the failure is greatest. The high gloss keeps the flow reading as liquid rather than as solid material shaped to look like liquid.
