METALLIC NEON SKULL is a memento mori that refuses to be morbid, built as an openwork lattice and finished in layered metallic and neon reactive paint.
The work. Created in 2021, the piece takes the oldest symbol of mortality in art and makes it luminous. The skull is not solid: it is constructed as a woven, cellular lattice, so light passes straight through the form rather than stopping at it. A shape that traditionally reads as dense and final instead reads as open and airy.
The experience. The work has three distinct states. In daylight it is metallic and commanding, and the lattice throws intricate shadow patterns onto the surface below. Under UV the neon reactive paint takes over. In darkness the glow elements carry it alone. Three readings of the same object, revealed over the course of a day.
Materials and craft. Skull form with layered metallic paints, UV neon reactive paint and glow in the dark elements, sealed under epoxy to a high gloss, presented on a display base and raised stand.
For the collector. A tabletop or plinth piece for a study, library, bar, media room or gallery corner, and a natural companion to the other memento mori works in the HYPNOTIQ catalogue.
