FIBER OPTIC VENUS | Sound Reactive Wall Sculpture | HYPNOTIQ

FIBER OPTIC VENUS is a wall mounted sculpture in which a classical female silhouette is given hair made entirely from fiber optic cable, illuminated and responsive to the music in the room.
The work. The Venus figure is one of the oldest subjects in Western art and has always been rendered in the most permanent material available: stone. Replacing her hair with light does something specific to that tradition. The most fixed part of the composition becomes the most mutable, and a form associated with stillness is given a component that never stops moving.
The form. The torso is sculpted by hand over a mannequin mesh base and finished in smooth plaster, then coated in a premium ultra thick resin infused with galaxy sparkles that catch light from every angle. From that form, fiber optic strands cascade downward as hair, glowing along their whole length. The piece is set within a thick, fully glossy black frame that contains the composition and makes the glow read harder against the dark surround.
The interaction. A built in sound sensor drives the fiber optics. The strands shift through a broad spectrum of colour and pulse to the beat of whatever is playing, casting moving shadows onto the surrounding wall. The work therefore changes with the room rather than sitting fixed in it.
For the collector. A statement wall work for a living room, media room, lounge, bar or hospitality interior, particularly where music is already central to the space. It suits collectors of light based, kinetic and sound reactive contemporary art.
