MARILYN NEON STACKED is the most technically ambitious Monroe work in the catalogue: a large format three dimensional wall installation that stacks the portrait in neon reactive layers.
The work. Created in 2023, the piece takes the most reproduced subject in pop art history and makes reproduction itself the subject. Stacking the portrait in physical layers means the viewer sees several versions of the same face at slightly different depths at once, which is a fair description of what fame actually does to an image.
The form. The layers sit at real intervals from the ground plane, so the work casts internal shadows and shifts as the viewer moves past it. A flat print cannot produce that depth, and it is the reason the piece rewards being walked past rather than only looked at.
The experience. Under daylight it commands as a graphic work. Under UV the neon reactive layers ignite and the stacking reads as a cascade of light rather than of pigment. The two states are genuinely different artworks in the same frame.
Materials and craft. Large format 3D layered wall installation with UV neon reactive paint, mixed media, resin elements, acrylics and epoxy, with gallery wall mount hardware.
For the collector. A feature wall work for a lounge, media room, entry, bar, gallery or hospitality interior, and particularly effective in a space that can be taken dark. It suits collectors of pop art portraiture and of UV and light reactive work.
