DESIGNER GORILLAS renders gorilla forms in the visual language of luxury fashion, setting the raw natural world directly against the constructed world of high design.
The work. Created in 2022, the piece carries the conceptual move that street art does best: place an animal inside a branded environment and let the audience decide who is civilised and who is wild. The question is genuinely open, which is what keeps the work from being a joke. The sculpture itself is unambiguous even when the answer is not.
The form. The gorillas are modelled with real anatomical weight, low and heavy in the shoulder, so the fashion surface treatment reads as applied to something powerful rather than decorative. Presented as a group, the figures play off one another in scale and posture.
Materials and craft. Resin cast gorilla forms with luxury fashion inspired surface detailing, acrylics and epoxy under a high gloss finish, on display bases.
For the collector. In a boutique they stop customers at the door; in a private collection they generate more conversation than almost anything else in the room. Simultaneously the most immediately accessible and the most conceptually layered work in the catalogue, suited to fashion inspired art collectors and to retail, showroom and residential interiors.
