SPINNING DONUT is exactly what it says: a high gloss donut in permanent motorised rotation on top of a custom oil drum base.
The work. Created in 2022, the piece stacks two of the most culturally loaded objects in American visual language, one of appetite and one of industry, and then adds the one thing neither has: motion. The result is absurd, precise and completely mesmerising, and the absurdity is the point rather than an accident of it.
The form. Circular motion is the whole mechanism. Something in the human brain locks onto a rotating circle and will not let go, which is why guests gather around this piece and why children and serious collectors react to it identically. The donut turns continuously above the static cylinder of the drum, so the composition is one moving circle above one still one.
Materials and craft. Resin donut form with a high gloss finish on a motorised rotating mechanism, mounted on a custom hand finished oil drum base.
